Botulinum Toxin Therapy For Bruxism

Bruxism, or involuntary teeth grinding, statistically occurs in 30% of people. Involuntary contraction of the masticatory muscles can occur both while awake and asleep. The result of such hyperactivity of muscles is enamel erased and loose teeth, headaches, tinnitus, cracks in the lower jaw, and even pathological changes in the temporomandibular joint. Bruxism also affects an individual’s appearance, as the increase in chewing muscles makes the face square, with the lower jaw appearing heavier.

There are several causes of this disease, but the main ones are considered to be bite defects and regular stress.

You can use botulinum therapy, injections of botulinum toxin, to get rid of involuntary teeth grinding. Small doses of botulinum toxin injected into the masticatory muscles block nerve impulses, relieving excessive tension in the jaws.

What problems can be treated with botulinum therapy for bruxism?

involuntary teeth grinding while sleeping;
tooth enamel abrasion;
discomfort when opening the mouth;
weight of the lower jaw;
enlargement of the jaw muscles.

How does botulinum toxin work to treat bruxism?

Small doses of the drug are injected directly into the tense masticatory muscles with a fine needle. Botulinum toxin, on which the drug is based, blocks nerve impulses coming from the central nervous system to the muscle fibers of the jaw. The drug blocks the work of a particular muscle, leading it to relax and decrease in tone. It is injected into strictly defined spots and does not affect the surrounding muscles. The drug is used in very small doses and is completely harmless and safe for the patient. Botulinum toxin therapy is practically painless and lasts about 15 minutes, and its effects remain for 5-8 months. During this time, botulinum toxin is completely eliminated from the body, and the work of the chewing muscles is gradually restored. But the tense muscles of the jaw have time to rest and relax and return to normal. In this case, the “square” jaw, gained from the disease, becomes smoother and more rounded.

Procedure stages

Consultation with a cosmetologist.
This allows the specialist to properly assess the problem and confirm the diagnosis. The doctor marks the points for injections. The dose of the drug is calculated individually for each patient
Botulinum toxin injection
During the procedure, 3-4 injections are done in different areas of the muscles. The specialist uses sterile syringes with very thin needles, making the procedure practically painless.
Rehabilitation after botulinum toxin therapy for bruxism
There may be slight redness at the injection sites after injecting the drug. This will go away in a few hours. Slight swelling is also possible, but it will go away on its own after a while. There are no strong restrictions after botulinum toxin therapy, but experts recommend that patients refrain from visiting saunas, massaging their face, or doing laser or infrared procedures for a week after the treatment.

Results of botulinum therapy for bruxism

the angles of the lower jaw are smoothed;
the face becomes more rounded;
discomfort when opening the mouth goes away;
the mandibular muscles relax.

Contraindications for botulinum toxin injections for bruxism:

pregnancy or lactation;
viral and infectious diseases in the acute stage;
oncological diseases;
inflammation of the facial skin at the injection sites;
allergy to botulinum toxin;
blood clotting disorders;
diabetes mellitus.
