Hyperhidrosis Treatment With Botulinum Toxin

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating can cause a lot of headaches for a person, including unpleasant odors, traces on one’s clothes, the inability to your remove shoes, or even shake hands without embarrassment. All of these are the consequences of heavy sweating. And the desire to get rid of this problem by any means is quite natural.

Specialists have identified six main causes of excessive sweating: thyroid disease, vegetovascular dystonia, being overweight, reaction to stress, menopause, as well as congenital hyperhidrosis. But, regardless of why the problem occurred, it still requires treatment. After all, hyperhidrosis is not just an aesthetic nuisance, but often a sign of systemic disorders in the body.

There are several treatment methods for excessive sweating. But before deciding on hyperhidrosis cosmetic correction, you need to undergo a complete examination, and find out the cause of the disease. Physiotherapy, laser therapy, or botulinum toxin injections are used to treat hyperhidrosis today. Surgical correction is performed in the most complex cases.

Our clinic uses the most effective and safe method to treat hyperhidrosis: botulinum therapy. Injections of botulinum toxin-containing drugs help with excessive sweating the underarm area, feet, and hands. They affect the volume of sweat production, significantly reducing it by blocking the work of the sweat glands. The sweat glands completely stop working on day 10-14 after injections, and the effect lasts from 6 to 8 months. The procedure must be repeated after that.

How does botulinum therapy for hyperhidrosis work?

The active ingredient in all botulinum toxin-containing products is botulinum neurotoxin type A. Injected in microdoses into problem areas, it is completely harmless to the body, but it is highly effective. It stops the production of sweat by blocking the connection between the nerves responsible for sweating and the sweat glands. The process is gradual, and that is why the maximum result of the procedure is seen only after 2 weeks. The specialist inserts thin needles under the skin to a depth of up to 3 mm, without affecting or blocking the sweat glands. Small papules form at the injection site and disappear very quickly.

Procedure stages

Consultation with a cosmetologist.
The specialist evaluates the severity of hyperhidrosis by conducting a Minor's test. A tincture of iodine is applied to the skin and allowed to air-dry. After drying, the area is dusted with starch. The sweat that comes out stains the starch purple. This simple test allows the specialist to understand the degree of sweating and calculate the proper dose of the drug.
Cleansing and sanitizing.
The site of the procedure is thoroughly cleaned and treated with antiseptic before botulinum toxin therapy.
Introduction of the drug.
The specialist injects the necessary dose of botulinum toxin into the selected points with a fine needle. The depth of needle insertion is no more than 3 mm, and the procedure resembles that of mesotherapy. The distance between two injections should not exceed one centimeter. The entire procedure takes no more than 10 minutes.
Rehabilitation after excessive sweating treatment with botulinum toxin
Slight redness at the injection sites after the introduction of the drug may appear, but that will go away in several hours. There are no strict restrictions after botulinum therapy for hyperhidrosis, but patients should not use antiperspirants in the injection sites for a week after undergoing the procedure. Experts also recommend not visiting the sauna, sunbathing, or drinking alcohol. Patients should additionally refrain from doing any heavy physical activity and visiting the gym.
